Biogenesis of insulin secretory granules in vivoA long-standing question in the field of pancreatic β-cells has been how glucose can quickly upregulate the overall expression of secretory granule proteins besides triggering the secretion of insulin. Previous studies have suggested that this induction relies primarily on the activation of post-transcriptional mechanisms, the identity of which has remained unclear.
Jakob is currently setting up a new cell line for experiments concerning the biogenesis of insulin secretory granules. This he will use to confirm Klaus' observations regarding a novel pathway which promotes the concerted expression of most secretory granule components. Subsequently, he will explore the function of this pathway in vivo using state-of-the-art recombinant technology.
With the support of his colleagues, Jakob also created and maintains this web site.
