THE ROLE OF PTB1 IN THE TRANSLATION OF VIRAL PROTEINS IN BETA CELLS
Type 1 diabetes mellitus is characterized by loss of the insulin-producing beta cells of the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas, leading to a deficiency of insulin. The main cause of this beta cell loss is a T-cell mediated autoimmune attack. Several viruses are discussed to be involved in pathogenesis of the disease. We want to analyze the role of Polypyrimidine tract-binding protein 1 (PTB1) known to be involved in regulation of insulin secretory granules biosynthesis in viral gene expression and its possible interference with the immune system.
